Fishing
The
Turneffe Atoll stretches 30 miles to the north and is 10 miles wide.
It encompasses over 200 mangrove islands and countless creeks and
streams that provide shelter and food for a wide variety of game fish.
Bonefish
Whether you are wading or your guide is poling the flats, large
schools of bonefish are a common occurrence along the miles of hard
coral and soft grass flats on either side of the southern end of Turneffe Atoll.
Due to the limited tide change and the near constant water
temperature, the bonefish population remains stable throughout the
year. Many flats hold resident bonefish that will tail in the deeper
water that is scattered along the inside reef flats.
Reef Fishing
Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Crevalle Jack, King Fish
Due to the pristine waters and the healthy marine environment, Belize
is home to a large variety of game fish.
Whether you are using conventional tackle or bait, locating these
prizes is a mere 10-minute ride from our lodge to the reef that
encompasses Turneffe Atoll.
Fishing along the reef with your guide in our Dolphin skiffs is an
option available to you at no additional cost. |
|
Schedule:
Our
typical day is 8 hours of fishing. The guides have the opportunity to
vary those hours depending on weather and pre-breakfast or post-dinner
tarpon fishing.
Your guides will be at the dock at 8:00 am and ready to leave for
fishing at 8:30 am. He will load your gear in the boat along with
plenty of cool water, any special drinks you've ordered and a
delicious lunch if you are planning to stay out all day. We serve
lunches every day in our dining room and many of our guests enjoy
coming in for lunch and getting out of the sun for an hour or so. Many
of the most productive fishing areas are not far from the lodge so you
won't lose fishing time traveling back and forth for lunch. |

Diving
Marine life on Turneffe Atoll is an array of aquatic
life and coral formations rarely found in the Caribbean. From small
tropicals to large pelagics including rays, turtles, and sharks, you
will see it all. This abundance of life results from our being the
largest of only 4 coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere.
Diving at Turneffe Island Lodge is an adventure that leaves even the
most experienced divers feeling absolutely pampered.
While 3 dives a day are offered, our program is
designed to let our guests choose which dives to take or for the avid
diver, take all 16 of them, including our night dive!
The first dive will take place shortly after breakfast. The second
dive will follow before lunch. Then take a nap or relax on the beach
and do your third dive mid-afternoon.
Diving Sites
The lodge is situated on the southern end of
Turneffe Atoll within 15 minutes of over 30 recognized dive sites.
The Elbow, unquestionably the best dive site in the western Caribbean,
is within 10 minutes of the lodge. Located on the extreme southern tip
of the atoll, this site is swept by ocean currents, which bring in
large schools of grouper, jacks, permits, and snappers. As you drift
along the pinnacles and sand shoots, you will encounter hawksbill and
loggerhead turtles, eagle rays and even hammerhead sharks.

About Belize The peaceful
country of Belize is a sovereign democratic state of Central America.
It enjoys a rich and diverse cultural heritage that has enabled it to
become a stable democratic society. No one is sure where the name
"Belize" originated or what it means. The country was called Belize
long before the British took over and renamed it British Honduras. In
1973, the locals changed it back to Belize as a first step on the road
to independence. In 1981, Belize gained its independence from the
British crown. The government is patterned on the system of
parliamentary democracy and is directed by a Prime Minister.
The government recognizes the tourism as its premium
growth industry and today tourism is the largest economic influence in
the country, surpassing agriculture in the last several years.
Recognizing the value tourism has on its economic development, the
Minister of Tourism is a cabinet level position within the Belizean
government.
The preservation of ethnic cultures, the animals,
the reef and the forests is a primary objective of the Belize
government and their concern for these assets that so vitally impact
the tourism industry will help ensure Belize as a quality destination
in the years to come.
Belize's climate is subtropical. The temperature can
range between 65° F (18 C) and 90° F (32 C) degrees but the average is
79° F (26 C) degrees. Water temperature ranges between 78° F (25 C)
and 80° F (27 C) degrees in the winter and can be 83° F (28 C) degrees
in the summer. The temperature at our location is generally
cooler and much dryer in the summer months than the mainland due to
the prevailing trade winds.
There is an easterly trade wind throughout the year
and it usually picks up in March and April. |
